Multiple Networks

I have just purchased an Inspiron 1501 with a Wireless 1390 802.11b/g Mini-PCI card. I want to obtain a Modem/Router to set up wireless for personal internet use .

I also work from home and already have a Belkin 802.11g 54Mbps 2.4 Ghz Modem/Router which was supplied by my employer for use with my seperate work's DELL which is password protected and soley points to my employer's system, I can't use this for personal use.

I want to be able to run both computers at the same time Wireless without interference...I do have 2 seperate ADSL phone lines.

What type of modem/router can I buy for this?

Thanks
Lee

I don't see the need for two separate ADSL lines.Too expensive to begin with. You might try calling Belkin tech support or try resetting the router to default mode and start setup again.Your work PC shouldn't differentiate from one router to next, all it needs is internet access.Hope this will help.

Thanks Trebligka.................

We already have 2 lines, that's a given...a private one and one paid for by my employer. The existing router is also suppied by them and operates on an encripted system............I can't use the router for private use.

The issue is I want to have my own laptop running wireless at the same time and want to buy another router which will work without interferance.

You can use the router's setup utility to change its channel. You will also be able to set up your new Vista computer to never connect to the "work" wireless.

NancyM1037 is correct. You can set the second router to broadcast on a channel different than your employer's router. Your laptop will probably pick up both networks but you can set it to connect only to your personal router.

Both fixes are absolutely correct. You can also enable MAC filtering on second router to work on your personal laptop only.

Thanks for the information, much appreciated...........
Can anyone recommend a router that has switchable channels...Do they all allow that?

......I like the Belkin supplied by my employer....I can't see anywy of changing it's channel, unless it's done through the set-up wizard.

Linksys (and most others) will allow you to switch channels. If you have the documentation for the Belkin, you might find some information there. If not, switch to IE, and then enter the address of 192.168.1.1 and [Enter]. This will bring up the configuration screen for MOST routers. If you can do this you should be able to make any required changes.

If you can't do this, perhaps your employer's IT department can help?

No recommendations, but they all allow you to change channels. This is necessary because of the possibility of conflicts with neighbors. You do this by entering the router's IP address in your browser address bar. That takes you to the router's configuration utility. (There will be instructions with the router.)
