My Documents Synchronization

I have two computers, a desktop and a laptop, on my home network workgroup that are both running XP Pro.  Is there a way I can make the My Documents folder and subfolders on both machines synchronized.  To do this with synchronization manager would require making one of them mapped as network drives which I don't want to do.

I use a program called ViceVersa Plus:

to synchronize many folders between my home computer, laptop, and work computer.  You can download and try it for free for 30 days, then, if you like it, register it for $29.95.  I tried a whole bunch of these types of synchronization programs, but found this one to be the easiest to use, most reliable, and best form my purposes.

Hmm. In help it says open my computer, click the folder in which you want to create a briefcase, File menu, new... I don't have an option for briefcase. Ditto with right click, new on the desktop.

Does this only appear if two PCs are connected? Mine is a stand alone.

Makes no difference. In any folder, or desktop, new does not have briefcase listed as an option, whether from file menu, new or right click, new.

JRosenfeld:

You are correct. In Step 2.) were it says "Click the folder..." should read "Open the folder...)

I use a program named Second Copy 2000.  It will sync, overwrite, update...you name it and this program will do it.

Do you have all the accessories and utilities installed from Window Components?

From searching MS, Briefcase is an option in accessories and utilities. Once installed you may not uninstall it, and it will not show to be unchecked or appear in Add or Remove programs. There is a KB article to remove access to it by editing the registry for NT systems.

I have found the files syncapp.exe, synceng.dll, and syncui.dll located in c:\windows\system32. Do you have these?

MSL,

Yes, I have those three files in C:\Windows\system32 folder. I checked the add/remove windows components and I have all the applications and utilities installed. Briefcase is not listed (calculator, charactermap, clipboard viewer, desktop wallpaper, document templates, mouse pointers, paint are the ones listed).

I created a shortcut to syncapp.exe on the desktop. Double clicking on that creates a briefcase icon on the desktop. Opening that it opens at  D&S\myusername\desktop\my briefcase, and I can drag and drop files into it OK. So it works. I just don't have it as an option in the right click, new menu. I'll explore registry settings to see if I can add it to the context menu. Not a big deal, now I know I can create a briefcase this way.

Thanks for pointing me to the required file.

Help and support gives the method below using a removable disk; by extension, it seems to me that it should also work from a second hard drive, but not sure, as I can't try it, having only one drive. (Drag the briefcase to the second drive instead of to the removable drive)

To synchronize files stored on a removable disk using Briefcase
Insert a removable disk into a disk drive on your main computer.
Open Briefcase, and then copy the appropriate files to Briefcase.
Drag Briefcase to the disk.
The files in Briefcase are copied to the disk.

Remove the disk from your main computer and insert it into a disk drive on your portable computer.
Open Briefcase from the disk and work on the files. When you are ready to synchronize the files, remove the disk from your portable computer and reinsert it into a disk drive on your main computer.
Open Briefcase from the disk, and then do one of the following:
To update all the files, on the Briefcase menu, click Update All.
To update only some of the files, select the files you want to update, and then on the Briefcase menu, click Update Selection

I want a program to synch a folder on my desktop with a folder on another hard drive in my computer.  Can briefcase synch files within one computer?  or do I need a program to do this?

Thanks

Further to my previous posts on this thread, I thiought it might be useful to mention that I got right click, new to work. In TweakUI, Templates,  I had it unchecked. Checking it there does the trick.
