If the USB drive causes the computer to crash on three different systems that I assume it is the USB drive and not the computers that are causing the problem. Have you tried connecting it to other computers?
When you connect a USB drive for the first time the computer will install a driver, that baiscally tells the computer what kind of instructions it needs to carry out in order to talk to your particular brand of USB drive. Sometimes when the drivers are loaded on the computer they are able to cause it to freeze. Windows 98 was very prone to showing the blue screen of death because whenever you connected a device, if it could not find the driver that was best suited for it, it crashed completely.
Does the computer just freeze completely or are you able to move the mouse around and click on the start menu with the keyboard? If you can, press CTRL+ALT+DEL at the same time to open Task Manager, and choose the column that says CPU usage. If you can, find the name of the program that has the highest number in CPU usage (apart from System Process). If you can, End that process and it might work.
I hope that helps.
