My Task Manager wont stay open!

normally when one holds CTRL + ALT + DELETE it will open the task manager, however mine wont even open. At most it will show the active icon in the windows toolbar, but as soon as my mouse scolls over it, the icon vanishes. I really need to figure out what to do to resolve the problem so I can, well, manage my tasks. Please help!

This may be caused by a virus.  Are you running antivirus software with up to date virus definitions?  If not, you should be.  For now go to the following site and do a free online virus scan:

If viruses and worms are not completely removed, they could still cause problems.  If you know the names of the viruses/worms that were once present on your computer, we could point you to tools for getting them off completely.

Alternatively, see the following message:

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=si_sysperf&message.id=1631

and follow the instructions for downloading and running HijackThis.  Then post your log in one of the recommended forums where a HijackThis expert can look at it and make recommendations.

I searched for any viruses and found some worms (or remnants of them) and got rid of them all.. I restarted my computer and nothing canged. My Task Manager still wont open. Thanks for the virus tip, but could it be something else? Please help!

The most likely cause for this, as Steve mentioned, is a virus. It is also possible that the TaskManager was disabled by a virus or worm that has since been eliminated from the system. See this to re-enable it.

So did you try any of the suggestions in the previous replies?

hey thanks guys. I deleted the remnants of the viruses on my computer and it opens now! Thanks a lot. Do you think it might have been part of the virus defending itself from being disabled by disabling the Task Manager?
