My machine is waking up from sleep mode without me touching anything!!!

I press the sleep mode button, everything goes to sleep and the light blinks on front of the machine. I wait 5 minutes.....the machine is still asleep. I go to bed, wake up in the morning and my machine has already logged itself in and brought itself out of sleep mode. Unfortunately, the machine does not make me a cup of tea and I have to switch it off with a shutdown to ensure it does not keep waking up whilst im at work. What am I doing wrong? I thought that pressing the power icon on the start menu puts the machine to sleep only for me to wake it up, and not for it to come alive on its own accord!!!!!

help me save power and explain the issue!!!

wakarimashta; it is probably your Windows Update or your Virus Scan that is set to update itself or check for updates....

1) In case of Win_Updates, do this:

Click the Windows Start Bubble

Type in Windows Update

Hit Enter

In the window that opens... look for "Change Settings" at the top left corner.

In your case the first option is selected.

Change that to second or third option (your choice)

Now Click OK

Now OK to UAC warning.

From now on, when updates are available, you will see the Windows icon in your task bar.

Click the icon, check the updates, and if you want them, first close all your programs, then select to install.

Once Win_Updates installs it will ask you to reboot, reboot... and you are done.

2) In case of your Virus Scan:

Again open its control panel and set it to allow you to check for updates.

Happy Dreams!!!

Peace

It could also be your network card.  Open device manager and go to network adapters. right click on any shown and select properties. tab through the adapters setting and look for wake on lan or allow this device to wake the computer and deselect or disable the setting.

Hello Wakarimashta,

I also had that same problem.  I found the solution when I finally remembered I had set my computer to "never sleep".

1.  Control Panel

2.  Appearance and Personalization

3.  Change Screen Saver

4.  Change Power Settings

5.  Change When the Computer Sleeps

6.  Put the Computer to Sleep

I love to watch old movies/tv series on the internet.  As you know after a period of inactivity (depending on your settings), first the screensaver initiates then the computer puts itself into sleep mode.

Over time I had forgotten the "never sleep" mode.  Whenever I put my computer to sleep, I would return to find it on again.  I would even stand over the tower and wait 5 minutes to make sure it went to sleep.:smileyhappy:

When I finally figured out what I had done, I had to laugh at how I stood over the tower daring it to come out of sleep mode.  And it would not, until I walked away.

I just wanted to share this story...  Hopefully you will find a solution in one of these suggestions.

Continued blessings,

Hi Nissi,

Thank you for your advice, I have now changed his settings to ensure he gets a good night sleep. I will refrain from feeding him hot milk and a biscuit as the manual suggests nil by disk drive.

That is funny.

Coincidentally, before I realized what I had done, I came to this forum to ask for help.  My Message Subject: This Child Refuses to Go to Sleep!:smileyvery-happy:

As I said before, I hope you find the solution.

Continued blessings,

Mine was waking at 3am... not too cool when it was on battery power. I tried a few other things from other forums but the one suggested by MoneyGuyBK is the winner. Setting the Windows Updates to install at another time, or to wait for me to choose whether to install them solved my problem. Thanks!
