Mysterious Problem

I've had a problem lately, that I'm not sure how to fix. It has two symptoms that I don't understand. Any thoughts on diagnostics are appreciated:

1) The following error occurs on the welcome screen (I autoload my only profile):

Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system.

DETAIL - The system has attempted to load or restore a file into the registry, but the specified file is not in a registry file format.

2) The computer hangs after 30 minutes of inactivity. I have turned off everything I can think of that works on a timer (screen saver, etc.).

I did previously have a problem that required me to make a new user profile, as the old one got corrupted (how I have no idea). However, this new problem did not immediately occur afterwards, so I don't know if it's related. Also, I have no apparent problems other than the two mentioned.

Problem #1:

Copy / paste the bold text below to Notepad:

ren C:\Documents and Settings\xxxxx\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat _UsrClass.dat
ren C:\Documents and Settings\
xxxxx\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat.log _UsrClass.dat.log
pause

Do not copy below here.

Important: Then replace xxxxx with your user name in the text above.

Then 'save as' UsrClass.bat (it must have the .BAT extension to work) to the desktop. Then run it. Reboot and you should be good as far as the default profile.

It gives an error for both commands: "The syntax of the command is incorrect."

I'm guessing that the idea is to remove (rename) a couple of files so that Windows will regenerate them?

My apologies on the error message.  Let's do this, as everything I tried brought up the same messages. I have used a similar batch file to fix the same thing on my computer, but it doesn't work now ????  Even the MS fix for a similar problem doesn't work:

(1) First get moveonboot from here:

After installing it, this will enable the fix.

When you run Moveonboot.exe it will ask for a source file name. Drag \ drop C:\Documents and Settings\xxxxx\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\usrclass.dat into the box (where xxxxx is your user name).

Have it delete the file.

Do the same for C:\Documents and Settings\xxxx\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\Usrclass.dat.LOG

Have it delete the file.

After a reboot you should be logged on automatically.

Ok, that seems to have fixed the problem. Whether it also coincidentally solves problem 2 remains to be seen. I guess I'll update if it still hangs. Thanks for the help.

You might be better off with a new post on problem #2
