NAV is killing cold boot time

Hey,

My system used to cold boot in less tha 2 mins. I updated to NAV 07 and now cold and even reboots take over 5 mins. I suspect NAV is running some sort of system check but i don't want nor need it to do so. I've poked around a bit in NAV but can't seem to find a way to stop this check at bootup. ANybody know a fix?

Thanks.

John

I experienced that a couple years ago with McAfee. I finally got rid of it half-way through my subscription and installed (free) AVG antivirus. Best thing I could have done.....
There are a few excellent ones... two being mentioned thus far.  Both excellent in my opinion.

"ANybody know a fix?"

Remove the resource hungry NAV, find something less invasive.

Norton came preinstalled on my machine which slowed everytning down to a snails pace so I promptly removed the hideous beast.Norton can be difficult to remove,in fact down right annoying.I still have registry entries I can't remove even with permissions set.

There are some very reliable freebies, such as avira, avg and avast which was mentioned in previous post.

If you chose to remove norton here is the tool.I believe you have to remove everytning pertaining to norton in add/remove first.

Thanks guys, but.. i was looking for a fix and not NAV bashing. Will probably go to one of the freebies when NAV expires but in the meantime i need a way to speed up my boot time.

"i was looking for a fix and not NAV bashing."

That Is how you fix NAV, not kidding or bashing, just the reality of the sorry software.

You cannot Fix bad software, only Norton can do that.

If you are a NAV die hard,Some say NAV 2008 works much better, less bloat/problems.

Good Luck. :smileyhappy:

I'd echo the same; nobody bashing Norton...just stating the facts, John.....

Maybe try the Norton forum (if there is one; I don't know for sure).   At least you'd be amongst many other people experiencing the same problems...:smileyhappy:

Bell Boy,

Yeah that's what i think is going on, or something similar, but i can't find any hints in all the menus available and was hoping one of the forumers would know a fix.

I'll see if i can find a chat on the Symantic site.

Thanks,

John

Not familiar with user options available in NAV setup configuration or settings?

Only mention this because once upon a time I had a “free” corporate version of McAfee with the ultimate “bells & whistles” user options, it was great – but not available on bog standard retail versions

One option I had to use to get an old Dell machine to boot in a timely manner was to disable the Scan boot record at startup, when enabled a line was added to autoexec.bat & it crippled the cold boot load process  :smileysad:

Good luck with Symantec forums

Just for information, McAfee VirusScan Properties had six tabs, each tab had ten or more user setting options (a very flexible system)

But the Scan boot record at startup option only appeared during AV configuration (using setup.exe), setup configuration for NAV retail version may or not include such an option?

Well McAfee must be much more user friendly than Norton as there is nowhere to access or change anything in the boot sequence and very little elsewhere as well. Tried to contact Symantec support for a chat and their program would d/l but not install or run so i struck out there too. Will try again later.

Thanks anyway.

I actually used McAfee for about two years; I subscribed for it and kind of liked it..... until they turned it into a huge, bloated "all-in-one" security package. That's when I ended my subscription four months early and switched to AVG. Wow, I should have listened to all the good user comments about it and installed it earlier, lol...

But I learn as I go; always something new in cyberland. And I spend hours here reading many, many posts; it's a wealth of information and I've learned so much...

Take care John; good luck with the NAV...:smileyhappy:

Try unchecking the option to load autoprotect during system startup. You'll find it in NAV, settings, additional options (Virus and spyware protection options), Autoprotect.
Note this does not disable autoprotect, just causes it to start later in the boot process (when the desktop is already up and the systray icons are loading).

I have NAV 2007, and I have my desktop useable in less than 2 minutes from cold start (XP SP2).

JRosenfeld,

Interesting, as that's when the delay starts. Desktop loads fine and then there is a 3-4 min. delay while NAV loads in systray. ZA shows lots of activity which i'm assuming NAV is phoning home during it's cheking.

Are you sure it's not ZA causing the delay?
In my setup I don't connect to the internet duting boot (I have to click an icon to connect via my USB DSL modem). If I load ZA on startup, it adds a good minute or so to the time. So I have not got it loading on startup. I load it before connecting to the internet (when it only takes about 10 seconds to load). I have ZA free 7.0.408, and I have uninstalled all the ZAISS junk that now gets installed with ZA free, even if one declines the offer to upgrade during install.
Of course, if your connection to the internet is established during startup, you should not do what I doas you then need the ZA protection.

The other thing you could try, is in NAV, disable internet worm protection. It is a (primitive) firewall, which you don't need if you have ZA (and they may be interfering with each other).

EDIT
Oh, I forgot one more thing, possibly the real answer :-): Maybe the 'phoning home' you see is NAV checking for updates, then (since there are daily updates) by default it does a quick scan. You can turn the quick scan after update off in the settings. Personally, I have Automatic Live updates turned off and run Live update manually once a day, and don't let it do a quick scan.

5min boot with NAV 2007/8 is not normal, obviously.  A littlemore info on your system and other apps you have on it like antispyware etc would help.  In the mean time you could try to remove NAV via add/remove, then download the norton removal tool from symantec and run it, reboot then reinstall NAV 2007.  Run an online scan from TrendMicro or BitDefender or Kaspersky first.  Unless your system is borked already in some way you should not be getting 5min boots.   For comparison a cold boot on an old pentium 3 XP SP2/IE7 system with 512mb ram with a couple antispyware programs and NAV 2007/8 with auto-protect on and software 2-way firewall is about 40 sec to get to the desktop.
