NET Framework 2.0

In the midst of trying to download the latest Java update someone suggested in the future using something call Update Checker from Filehippo.  http://filehippo.com/updatechecker/ This link said I needed version 2 of NET Framework. I have version 1.1 and was wondering if I should remove this from Add/Remove Programs before installing version 2. Not sure just what this program does or how it works so I thought I would ask about before deleting. Thanks for any info.
