To top it off I disabled the Alps Touch Pad, so when the USB went out so did the mouse… now I can only work in Safe Mode with Networking which allows the touch pad to work.

The Dell driver update tool will not work in Safe Mode.

I have searched for all *.inf files on C: drive and manually tried the ones refering to USB, opening the folder they reside in, in Wizard to see if they contain a USB Host Controller that will work. Nix!

You could try uninstalling in Device Manager and reboot to see if XP will find the right drivers

I,ve also ran the Dell Notebook system software update which updated some USB files.

Microsoft has repliede to this problem by saying that Dell preinstalled the OEM OS and they would be the ones to supply the driver and the solution.

Yes, I did use Device Manager to delete the corrupted drivers, and tried to update the files on reboot!

Success

I was having to move the pointer with the touchpad then press enter.

When Wizard found the unsigned driver, the dialog box said "STOP INSTALLATION" and "CONTINUE ANYWAY".

I moved the pointer over continue anyway, then pressed the Enter button; but, because the stop installation button was highlighted... I was cancelling the installation... thinking I was continuing.

I also got the Touch Pad working by going to RUN>msconfig and not starting the Alps Touchpad software.
