Need Windows 7 Installation Disk for New Hard Drive

Question

Our Studio XPS 7100 hard drive completely crashed and the computer will not boot (error says 'No boot drive available'). The computer is out of warranty so I'm trying to fix it myself, with some help from an IT friend who confirmed that the drive was bad. We bought a new drive and we need to install Windows 7 before it will do anything. The computer did not come with the Windows 7 disk. When I go to the Dell download center, it seems to be trying to scan my computer to see which downloads I can get. It also says I need Internet Explorer to download. However, I'm using our iMac to try to get Windows 7 onto a CD and I obviously can't get Internet Explorer. Can someone in Dell support just email me a link to download Windows 7? I can provide my Windows 7 product key and any other information proving that I do own a Dell computer that came with Windows 7. It doesn't seem right that I can't reinstall Windows 7 just because the disk didn't come with the computer like it used to. All of the customer support phone numbers require payment. Please help!! Never mind, I spoke with Dell customer support on the phone and they are mailing me a disk at no charge. Yay!

Dell does NOT offer a download of the Windows installation media. Also, Dell non longer includes installation media with their computers - neither do nearly all major OEM's, all of them employing a hard drive recovery process built into the original factory installation - this is at Microsoft's request.

You will need to request an installation DVD from Dell. Being out of warranty, it will cost a little. This DVD will not require a Product Key and will activate automatically when installed on a qualifying Dell PC that has a Windows 7 license.

Alternatively, you can download a "retail" copy of Windows 7 to install with, then use your Product Key to activate it (may require phone activation):
