Need help with Dell E1505 OS

I bought a used Dell Inspiron e1505.

It came with Windows Vista Home Premium, and all was fine. But then the Hard Drive failed...I took it to a computer store. Where the guy put in a new 200GB HDD, which is in two 95 GB portions. He also installed Windows XP Home. Well, im tired of XP Home now, and I transfered my ownership and was wondering...

If I got the set of Dell discs, can I use them to go from XP back to the original Vista? I still have the Vista sticker on the bottom...with the key..

If you have the Vista Dell discs for this model you can use the Dell product code and install.  You would need to reformat the hard drive and install.  HERE is the Dell manual installation procedure.

If you are the registered (with Dell) owner and have the service tag number you MAY be able to get a replacement set of discs from Dell either free or at a minimal cost.  THIS is the Dell request form for US customers.

So, if I have the original discs I can install Vista even though I have XP now.

But the only way to do that is to backup my info and put it back on later because I have to preform a clean install and not upgrade? I would rather upgrade and keep all my stuff....but from what im understanding a upgrade isnt possible with the Dell CDs. Only a clean install is...
