Need to create a DOS bootable CD for my TSST sata CD/ROM drive

I need to run some old programs and some newer ones that all use DOS not Windows command prompt. I have SATA hard drives and a SATA TSST CD/ROM and I have had problems with images not booting since they weren't created for SATA CD/ROM drives and I can't edit the programs. How can I boot my Dell Inspiron 530 from my TSST SATA CD/ROM drive and still access my hard drives. Do I need to write an old autoexec.bat and config.sys file that have newer drivers for both my CD and Hard drives? Thanks for the help.

Hello cabits, You cannot just edit the autoexec.bat and config.sys files and achieve what you would like to do. The DOS system will have to be installed on a drive, preferably MS-DOS 6.2. It has many files that are needed to run DOS based programs. This is just an idea, but you could, either install a small drive for this, or partition you primary drive and install MS-DOS to that partition. You then would have to change the boot order each time you wanted to use DOS. You would also need to have the newer SATA drivers available for DOS to load in order to recogonize the drive(s). I may be wrong about this, since I am trying to remember all this from my DOS days.

Might consider using an emulator - or install DOS as a virtual OS.

I've used DOSBOX to play old games, but you may need something more substantial:

For installing a virtual OS look for Microsoft Virtual Machine or VMWare (both free) ;  also look for FreeDOS as an alternative to an old copy of DOS.
