New Hard Drive Dell Inspiron B120

Good Day,

Dell Inspiron B120

Service Tag:

Laptop is used for Media storage etc.

The hard drive died.

I am trying to build an Unattended install XP sp3 CD.

Perhaps I should try Win 7 but I do not know if it is compatible.

I would like to avoid the “activate” and “registrtion” process.

The Dell OS Recovery Tool cannot find the OS.

I cannot get the XP Product Key used for the original Installation.

Hard Drive died. “Read Fail” on Boot.

I also cannot get the Product ID.

Nor can I get the “OEMBIOS” and “WPA” or “winnt.sif” files.

Finally, do you recommend NTFS or FAT32?

Can you help?

Thank you,

Joe

Why an unattended install?

Simply buy a Dell Windows XP3 CD on eBay and install.

Will any Dell XP sp3 CD work?

I'll look for one.

Any advice about the drivers etc?

It's an Inspiron B120. Quite old.

It must be a Dell XP SP3 CD.  They sell for about $12.95.

The XP Home SP3 are olive label and XP Pro SP3 are turquoise blue label.

Thanks.

Drivers are on Dell.com

You will need to install Dell notebook system software first then chipset everything else.

Thank you.

I did not see the "Dell Notebook System" in the downloads for this laptop.

Where is that found?

It's there. I checked. Don't use your Service Tag number.
