No Vista SP1 without KB937954

Windows Update will not offer Vista SP1.  I uninstalled the SigmaTel audio driver and let Vista reinstall a MS driver with no help. Then I followed a link from jmwills: http://willsit.com/vistasp1.aspx and read in the SP1 Deployment Guidelines the computer (Home Premium) must have three Vista Updates  before it will download SP1, namely KB937287, KB938371, and KB937954 (another one for Ultimate/Enterprise).

I do not have KB937954 and WU is not offering it to me. The other two were installed in early February. I would like to avoid the Stand Alone package installation for SP1 but first have to get the missing update. Any ideas and how or why WU won't provide it.

I know you need 937281, 938371, but Preminum does not need 937954.  I have home premium 4 of my 5 and none of them have the 937954 update.  You shoudl not need it as you have Home premium, the other update is for Ultimate/Enterprise.  Or am I misreading what you have written?

When you deleted the drivers did you use PROGRAMS AND FEATURES....you know...START>CONTROL PANEL>PROGRAMS $ FEATURES> then uninstall it that way?  That is all I did.

It might take a few trys to access SP1 when you do delete the drivers.  I had to his check for updates 3 times before it starting working.

I uninstalled the SigmaTel driver by going to Device Manager, uninstall and checking the box "delete the software for this device."  Then rebooted and let Vista install its own MS driver - which it did successfully.

Now from the SP1 Deployment Guide, Small Scale Scenarios, using Windows Update, I'm pasting the following info to begin the update:

3.

Click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Windows Update, and then click Check for Updates. The following updates will be offered one at a time if they are not already installed:

KB937287 (This update may require a restart.)

KB937954 (This update may require a restart.)

KB935509 (This update is only for computers running Windows Vista Enterprise or Windows Vista Ultimate and requires a restart.)

KB938371 (This update requires a restart.)

Repeat this step until you have installed each of these prerequisite updates, each time waiting 10 to 15 minutes for the installation of the update to complete.

I don't have KB937954 as I mentioned before...think it's a script that does something with the registry.  That's what I believe I need.  All other prerequisites seem to be met.

Thanks for the info mike3960, however the SigmaTel driver you mentioned, R171788.exe, was not at all compatible with my XPS desktop and would not install.  I'm back to the Microsoft driver now but really puzzled about your upgrade without the KB937954 update.

So, with that in mind, and a solid Vista audio driver, I still cannot get access to SP1.  Something more must be going on here.

Previous version of what?

I'm not getting any error messages...WU simply says my computer is up to date.

What finally did it was to go back and reread Eskymi's suggestion:  I uninstalled the SigmaTel driver using the Programs & Features selection on Control Panel.

Even though Device Manager indicated I had installed MS drivers, Progams & Features still showed an entry for SigmaTel.  After uninstalling it and rebooting, Vista re-found the MS driver and reinstalled.

After two  attempts at Windows Update, the SP1 update appeared and is ready to download/install.  Sorry I got all tangled up in the KB****** requirements.  Just the two mentioned above are required.

Bart, thanks!  I uninstalled the audio driver that came with my wife's I6400 but was never offered the Vista SP1 until I deleted the Sigma driver from Control Panel \ Programs and Features.

Had I read your post when you posted it, my wife's laptop would have had the SP1 _months_ sooner.

Thanks!  Dave Horne - The Netherlands

Dave,

So glad the thread helped.  The Programs & Features uninstall of the Sigmatel driver is the key.

It sure took me awhile also to realize that.

And with SP1 I've really had few if any problems. The computer runs well.
