Non-Functioning Admin Services, Duplicate Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, CHKDSK Issue
I have an Inspiron 5100 w/XP Home. It is a single user setup. The HD is partitioned: C: Operating system, D: CD-RW, E: Data, F: Programs, G: Pagefile.
Running: Wireless network w/ Netgear router/card, Zone Alarm Pro, Norton AV 2003, Diskeeper 8
Problems: 1) Listening to a computer talk show, discussion about the Admin services. Never used them before, and was surprised that as I clicked on each one, the files wre missing, as a pop-up box explained, e.g.: "Cannot open comexp.msc. To open file, Windows needs to know what program created it..... This occurs with a) Component services, b) Computer management, c) Event viewer, d) performance, e) MS.net framework configuration, f) Services, and under System Tools, in the Programs folder, Disk Defrag. Actually there are more services which I've noted in doing a search of *.msc, and comparing the results against my Dimension desktop.
Is this problem resolvable by putting my Dell Operating System Disk in and running Upgrade, or do I need to do a complete re-install after f-disk?
Problem 2: Under Control Panel, "Add or Remove Programs" appears twice, and both work. I've tried to go to Safe Mode to remove one, but to no avail. Also, Under: Start/Programs/System Tools, it only appears there once.
Problem 3: Diskkeeper 8 has been running flawlessly for months. I had a system freeze ( has only occurred 2 or 3 times in the past year) which was only resolvable by popping out the battery. Now Diskkeeper will not run on my F partition due to "CHKDSK is scheduled to run on next start, and is creating a conflict. When rebooting, CHKDSK runs, but Diskkeeper keeps returning with the same message. How do I resolve this? I've tried running CHKDSK on drive F in Safe Mode, but it wants to unmount the partition, and I'm uncertain at that point if I should, due to will it then remount the partition after the repair?
Actual operation of all other programs are uneventful, and perform well.
Final Note: I just got an Iomega external HD with Norton Ghost 2003 and a backup program. I do not plan attempting any repair until I've backed everything up.
Thanks for the help.
