Do you have any other Norton products like System works, any previous Norton Anti Virus software installed on your PC? If so, you need to uninstall these first. If you have done and it still does not work you can try the Norton Removal Tool which you can download from the Symantec website. If that does not work either, you may need to edit your Windows Registry manually to erase all Norton, Symantec etc. entries.
WARNING! Editing the Registry should only be carried out by advanced users, because if you erase something else then your system may become unstable.
I had a similar problem with Norton products on my XP Pro system and after the above action was I able to install and use the software.
One word of wisdom here: I am using now BitDefender Internet Security as this software does not (ab)use as much system recources as Norton or McAfee products which are full of bloatware.
Ok I will tell you the whole problem and see if somebody can help me....I upgraded to internet explorer 7, then tried to load Norton 360. It would stop running giving me an error message saying that it stopped running and to restart my PC. So I would then restart my computer and it would try again....no luck....so then I figured it must be something with internet explorer 7...so I changed it back (I think) to internet explorer 6....still Norton 360 will not finish the quick scan or the configuration of it....now I get an error message saying "the instruction at "0x6600accc" referenced memory at "0x6600accc." The memory could not be "read". Click ok to terminate the program...the box at the top says a couple of different things...Cwnd session Monitor: iexplore.exe application error and Acrobat IEhelper: iexplore.exe application error....
Did this happen because of internet explorer 7 or because of Norton 360? Nobody seems to know how to fix this problem...Dell told me to call a tech and get charged for it. I have windows xp...
The Dell tech. emailed me wanting me to chage the virtual memory section on my computer, also to perform a clean boot in windows Xp, steps to start the window installer service, manual steps to return from a clean boot state....I don't have a clue on any of this..
Try to chat to one of the symantec technicians via their website. They are usually quite knowledgeable. I am afraid I have no other idea at the moment. Try and post your question at the Virus/Spyware forum again, maybe there is someone with an idea. I don't think Dell would be able to help as this seems to be a Norton v. Windows clash.
I am getting the same "application error" with the same memory location at 0x6600accc. However, I get it when closing Internet Explorer. Norton is not installed on this machine. This is a brand new Precision laptop.
May be better to start a new thread since you dont have Norton 360, but, did you happen to add any new software before this started, like Yahoo toolbar or anything else? If it's the same error message over and over at closing IE, it would appear some app hooked into IE is not releasing memory as it should. You could try a system restore to a point where it was not doing it. Run a complete system scan for malware just for good measure as well.
Not that I am aware of...my computer has been restored and still not fixed...sometime I just need to sit down and figure out if I can get the Norton 360 added on again...if I disable some stuff and do like this Dell Tech. emailed me to do.
kathnewburn, if you want to reinstall 360, then download the Norton Removal Tool from symantec and run the tool. Then go online to Symantec and run their online malware scan. If you are able to complete that and come up clean, then try to reinstall 360.
