its4u, First check your settings. Open up NAV. Go to Options>under Auto Protect>How to Stay Protected-put a checkmark in Enable Auto-Protect...Start Auto-Protect when windows start ups...Show the Auto-Protect Icon in the tray...Check these settings first. Also do a Live Update. Post back if this does not correct the problem.
Am having same problem with nav2003 except it worked fine for a while now it will not let me have auto protect and email scanning ..............
I have done all the things that Norton has suggestged .......remove and install and all the others but to no luck!!!!!!!!!!!! scanned by two online services and no virus detected............the last install was fine till reboot then back where we started
thought maybe Dell could come up with something!!!!!!!
I've got the same issue with Norton AntiVirus 2003 that came pre-installed with my new Dell Dimension 4600. I can not activate the auto-protect function although I completely re-installed NAV multiple times. I found that auto-protect works if I don't run LiveUpdate after the installation. As soon as I run LiveUpdate NAV stops working in auto-protect mode and it can not be re-activated.
By doing LiveUpdate manually after the installation of NAV I got the error: "Norton AntiVirus has encountered an internal program error..." (3003,111) when running LiveUpdate". In Symantec's knowledge base I found a solution to this error (go the the support webpage and search for 3003,111 or document ID 20021223142204905). Unfortunately, both solutions they suggest did not work for me. May be it works for you guys. Symantec's support redirected me to Dell as the NAV that comes with Dell computers is an OEM version.
Please let me know if you were able to solve this issue.
maybe they need to,,,, to see that there is a problem with these computers and and antivirus software I tried to use AVG antivirus and had the same problem except I can start autoprotect but have to do it after each boot...........
A friend of mine got the solution from German Dell support. The Problem comes from the Symantec common client Patch 1.09 which is automatically installed through Life Update.
The temporary solution is:
1. Uninstall Norton Antivirus 2003
2. Reinstall it, but choose not to run LiveUpdate
3. Check in Control Panel that LiveUpdate is using the interactive mode
4. Run LiveUpdate and inspect the proposed Updates. If there is a Common Client Patch 1.09 then uncheck it
5. Allow the other components and virus definitions to update.
You need to check this on each LiveUpdate until Symantec provides a fixed version of the Patch. I can't understand why they distribute this corrupt patch for several weeks now! I didn't find a confirmation for the problem on the Symantec web site, but here is a Link to a german article confirming the problem: http://www.pctip.ch/webnews/wn/26537.asp
