I had the same problem. I got connected to the internet, and that is all. It would just set there. Home page would not load. I could not use email, nothing. I tried to do a system restore, would not work, as I did not have any changes to my computer, so it would not do it.
I had to un-install/re-install NIS 2005, and went and got updates, excluding the Common Client one, under the Security Software update. It works fine as long as I don't install that update. (This was on my Dimension 4100)
Tried update on my Inspiron 1100, did the same thing, but was able to do a system restore. After the SR, I went and got updates, excluding the Common Client one, and it works fine.
The reason I know it is Common Client, is it had virus definitions that same day, and I had only installed the definitions on my Inspiron, everything ok, than later installed Common Client, and you know the rest.
