Not able to print with printer connected via USB

I'm running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 on a Dell Dimension.  I have a HP printer 660C which worked with no problems when connected to the parallel port.  I have now attached an external zip drive to the parallel port.  I then purchased a cable to connect the printer to one of the USB ports, but I'm not able to print.  I have tried both USB ports and both ports have worked when connected to my digital camera.  When configuring the printer, I have used both USB001 and USB002 as printer ports.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you

Did you remove the printer from Printers and Settings and then reinstall as a new printer? If you didn't do that, Windows doesn't see the "new" usb connected printer. Don't select the printer port. Let Windows find it. I'm assuming the 660c has both parallel and usb and you are not using a converter cable.

you might just have to reinstall the drivers. run the disk that came with it, it should set it up. if you dont have the disks, try running a windows update, it may have the drivers you need. if that doesnt work, check the hp site for the drivers for that printer

I did delete the printer and reinstall.  Windows did not find the printer.  I had to manually attach.  I am using a converter cable.  It has USB on one end and the standard printer interface on the other end.  By standard interface, I mean the same connection that was used with my parallel port cable.  Thank you.

I suspect you should take this up with the manufacturer of your cable. I do not believe either Dell or HP would support such a configuration. Parallel and USB are completely different protocols; different drivers; etc.

The HP site tells me that Windows XP has the latest drivers.  I have tried to drop and reinstall the printer with no luck.  I should have stated in the initial message that the cable I'm using has a USB port on one end and the standard printer interface on the other end.  There is no USB port on the printer.  Thank you.

That's your problem! Those cables rarely work with XP. You should reattach the printer to the parallel port and forego the obsolete zip drive or buy a new usb printer.
