Not able to retrieve my emails from server

I can't retrieve my emails from my server even though the server is working and I have internet access. I can access my emails on the server from the outside (through the internet) but I can't get them to download onto my computer.

The dsl and servers are working as per their technician. I have mcafee antivirus and spybot software and have run all the scans and found nothing. I've deleted and emptied all recycling bins and the amount of memory space shouldn't be an issue. I've tried restoring the computer back a few days but it said that it couldn't be completed because there were no changes made to the computer. I've gone through dells XP troubleshooting suggestions.  I'm befuddled--help!

Are you using the McAfee Personal Firewall.  If so, you may have inadvertently blocked your email client.

No, I'm not using a firewall, just their antivirus.

The message retrieving box just sits and "spins" for many minutes trying to retrieve the messages, after a while the message comes up ".. outlook express unexpectedly terminated the connection...possible causes include server problems, network problems, or large periods of inactivitity.."

The other weird thing is that sometimes you can't open up the outlook express program from either the IE program or the shortcut icon.

If you post the text of the error message, I'm sure someone will be able to dig up an answer.

I'd start with an up-to-date AdAware scan. http://www.tucows.com/preview/236049.html

The first message may be to big or too small.

What are you using for a firewall ? Has this changed recently ?
