Notepad and restoring the boot to normal

I have a Dell XPS 8500  running Windows 8.1 that has been bringing up Notepad during the second half of the boot sequence. I have done everything that the community has suggested including the "clean boot" with no success. Now when I try to restore the system the boot stays in the "Selective mode" and will not let me return to the "Normal mode". Please help and yes, I still have the Notepad problem.
