If you have adobe installed and still .pdf files are opened in Notepad, try changing the file extension. Instructions are given below:
1. Open Windows explorer
2. Click tools menu and select Folder options
3. Click File Types tab. From the list of files, select .pdf file and click the Change button. Select Adobe from the list.
4. Click OK and restart the system.

You need Acrobat Reader to open .pdf files. You can download it here.
