Partition Commander

I tried to install Partition Commander, a program I used on Win98, on my Dim 8300, XP Home edition.  A dialog box came up saying a 16 bit MS DOS program tried to acces my hard drive.  It gave a choise of close or continue.  I clicked continue and the screen went black.  I checked on compatibility mode for installing and tried using Win98 mode with a lower screen resolution.  The same thing happened.  From what I've read, most programs that worked on other Windows would work in XP.  I'm wondering if anyone has experience in installing this program or similar situations and could point me in the right direction.  Or indicate whether or not this program will work in XP.  Thanks.

Ken Butler,

You can see if Micro$oft KB 314106 or KB 324767 will help in possibly troubleshooting a problem. Also this thread may be of interest.

Marc:

Thanks for your references.  They appeared to be just what I need.  However, I went thru the procedure outlined in Q324767.  I tried installing after the first one.  No dice.  Same dialog box.  So I proceeded with the additional things to do.  One of them is to "right click %SYSTEMROOT%\System 32 folder"and paste.  I can't find this folder anywhere.  I even tried search with no luck.  What do I do now coach?  This folder is the subject of a previous entries in Notepad and saved in Autoexec.nt.  This entry doesn't produce this folder in my mind.  Where do I find this folder?  Thanks.

Partition Commander versions 8 and 9 are Windows XP native applications.  I suspect that you are running an older version, which will probably not work on Windows XP, even if you can get it installed.

It is an older version.  It is PC 6.02.

Ken Butler,

Open windows explorer, (Rt click Start, select explore) you should find the system32 folder in C:\Windows\system32.

As msgale stated you may not be able to get an older version to work in XP. From Vcom's site version 6 is no longer supported and it appears support ended with WindowsME. They do offer an upgrade to version 8 (for a price) and state that prior purchase of version 6 is required but do not state whether it must be installed or not.
