Pc Pitstop erase

Question

Does anyone have any experience with the abover software. I dowloaded it from a link in a PC World newsletter, but have not run it. I am concerned that I may delete something I really don't want to.   I know I can go to IE and delete cookies, temporary internet files and cache, but again, I am afraid I will dlete something I want to keep. I have websites that I visit everyday, such as my bank and credit card accounts. I have the  McAfee security suite and have that set up so I have to approve every cookie that anyone wants to send me.   I assume that If I either run PC pitstop erase or do it in IE, that I will erase all of those cookies, plus all of the url's on my browser and other stuff I want to keep. I just don't want to screw things up.   Please give me some insight.   Thanks. Rich

Hi Rich:

I haven't used that utility, but a lot of your questions about what it does are answered here:

1) First of all, you can do just about anything Erase does from within IE, or using other free utilities- I don't think Erase is worth paying for. However I do see that Erase has a backup function to restore anything erased by mistake.

2) To make sure you don't lose websites you visit often, just add them to your favorites list: In IE, click on "Favorites>Add to favorites" while at the website you wish to bookmark.

3) Clearing your internet cache does not delete your cookies (both wanted or unwanted), if you go to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab, scroll down, and under 'Security' put a check next to "Empty temporary Internet files when browser is closed". This will clear your cache every time you close IE. I use this setting.

Perhaps you should ask yourself if you need to erase all the other stuff. If you are the only one with access to your PC, probably not. Do you really care if others see what sites you have visited? Programs like this feed on peoples' paranoia, and are usually not necessary.

Thanks a lot for your reply. You are right, I really don't care if anyone sees the sites I have been. My wife and I are the only ones with access to the PC so that isn't an issue either.

I will use your suggestions on both clearing cache each time I close IE and also bookmark my "favorite" sites.

I had read an article in a PC World newsletter about clearing cache, cookies and temporaty internet files and thought it sounded like a good idea. But I don't have a lot of files on my PC so speed isn't really a problem. Jus t thought it would clear up clutter.

If you want a good cleaner where you select what to clean then this is the program:

Be aware that what it cleans is irreversable except for registry entries which souldn't be touched anyway. Read the list of what it wants to clean and uncheck all you're not sure of. You can always add more later.
