Please help removing windows update nag
If this is the wrong forum to ask please point me in the right direction. We just got a new notebook Insprion 6000D, Windows XP SP2.
I have disabled windows automatic updates I want to do that myself. How in the world do I remove this from the system tray and stop the nag screen from telling me I’m at risk?
Completely off this topic. This is the fifth Dell that I’ve owned. This one does not come with a disk (Windows XP) I do have the option to make my own. In my opinion this is very cheap and tacky on Dell’s part.
Thanks Karen

No, it's called reducing overhead expenses and keeping the system prices low.
On the Automatic Update issue, if you right click My Computer and go to properties, there will be an Automatic Update tab there. You will have several options to choose from. I go with the download, but let me choose option.

Including a system disk would only increase the price of a new computer by a few dollars. Making our own many things can happen to homemade disk. They sometimes just go bad. I’m not real computer smart but have created dozens of music disk over the last seven or eight years, and some just go bad.
Thanks for your suggestion but the option to stop nagging me, and remove this icon from the system tray is not there, unless I’m overlooking it.

Customer Support by telephone is the route to take. Dell's new policy is given here.

This is what I did and I'm not saying it's correct but it worked for me.
Disabling Security Center from within Services msc
1/ Click Start button
2/ Click Run
3/ In the Run dialogue box type: ‘services.msc’ (without the quotes)
4/ In the services window scroll down the list until you come to Security Center
5/ Double Click on the Security Center option
6/ The Security Center properties window will open
7/ In the Start Type dialogue box it should read ‘Automatic’
8/ Click the Green arrow on the right of the dialogue box
9/ From the drop down menu select Disable
10/ Click the Apply button followed by OK to Exit the Security Center Properties Window
11/ Finally Exit Services msc

I did that but it was still in the sys tray and I would get a nag screen telling me it was turned off.
Thanks

I'm at work right now. Maybe I did something wrong. I will un-do what I did and try it again the way you suggested. I did it that way and was still in the sys tray. Maybe I should have re-booted my computer. I will give it another go this evening.
Thanks
