PowerDVD content protected?

I recently got a new hard drive on my Inspiron, and after reinstalling the PowerDVD software, all but two of my DVDs won't play because their "content is protected."  What's up with that?  I bought these DVDs straight from the store!  And they worked with my old hard drive.

Can anyone at least reccommend another FREE DVD player?  I tried Windows media, but it doesn't have the codec whatever to play, and I don't know where to download this (and I'd have to buy it anyways, right?).

Thanks!

Most likely under the power DVD player options there is a selection to not allow protected content to play or something similar to that. But actually I prefer windows media player best. Try selecting start>select programs access and defaults. Then select custom. Then under choose a default media player select windows media player and make sure the box to the right is checked for enable access to this program. Then select ok. You may need to restart windows but try this and see if windows media player will then work.

Thanks for your help, but my DVDs won't play in Windows Media either (because content is protected).

I'm thinking that I never properly installed my video driver.  Could that be the problem??  Whenever I try to install the Intel Graphics Video Rev. A07 driver from the CDs Dell gave me, an error message pops up saying "one or more files required for installation are either missing or corrupt."  What do I do now?

Before installing the video driver did you first install directx 9.0c and also net. frameworks 1.1 or higher? You need to do this before installing the video driver and you can d/l it off the microsoft site. Not sure this is the problem with write protected unless you are tying to copy them. If you did what I suggested last post maybe windows media player would play them. Not sure you even tried it though.

There is probably a Macrovision issue on your computer somewhere.

Thanks everyone for your replies!  I solved the problem though by downloading a Dell video driver that I guess I never did properly when I replaced my hard drive.  Right after I installed it my DVDs worked in both PowerDVD and Windows Media!

I have tried everything I know how to do to play DVD's and I can't get it, I hope someone can offer me some advice. I have-- XPS1210 notebook Windows XP, SP2 NVidia GE Force Go 7400 w/ 256 Meg No matter what program I use to try and play a DVD I get this "content protected by Macro Vision" error. I've tried Media Experience, Windows Media Player, Power DVD and they all tell me the same thing. Check my video drivers or screen congifuration. I have downloaded and installed the latest video drivers from Dell, as well as the latest audio drivers and the Dell Media Experience upgrade. Any ideas as to what the issue might be or where I might look? Thanks

ebow66:

Thanks for posting to the Dell Community Forums.

You will probably receive a quicker response if you post your question as a *New* post, rather than to this older thread.

Good Luck!
