Problem connecting to Gnutella Network
Hello,
I’ve recently been having problems connecting to the Gnutella Network through LimeWire; actually I haven’t been able to connect for a week. The program says I have a firewall in my system but I haven’t been able to find any nor I haven’t installed any. Furthermore, I was able to connect without a problem a month ago.
I thought it was a problem with the LimeWire’s 4.0.7 version, but I noticed I had a similar problem with other Gnutella software such as Xolox, Ares, Morpheus, etc. I just performed a full system check for viruses with NAV, and for spyware with PestPatrol, and my computer came up clean.
As for my OS and Internet connection, I have Windows XP (with all updates and service packs) and I connect wireless through a Linksys router that goes to a cable modem of 256 kbps. However, I have the same problem if I connect directly to the cable modem through an RJ45 cable (so the problem is not a router’s firewall) I also contacted my ISP to see if they had any firewalls against any Gnutella software, but they do not.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Beto

How about the XP default firewall?  From Windows help:
To enable or disable Internet Connection Firewall
Open Network Connections
Click the Dial-up, LAN or High-Speed Internet connection that you want to protect, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.
On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select one of the following:
To enable Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), select the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.
To disable Internet Connection Firewall, clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.
Notes
To open Network Connections, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.
You must be logged on as a computer administrator to complete this procedure.

Thanks, but I have already done that and I'm still unable to connect. I even tried to enable the ICF and open a port (6346, commonly used for Gnutella networks) under advanced settings, but still no connection through LimeWire. I was unable to asign the IP address for LimeWire (which is 127.0.0.1)

Can you do a System Restore to prior to the onset of the problem?
Have you tried a "repair" installation of XP from your CD?

Do you know how do I do a "repair" installation of XP CD? I bough my Dell with Windows Me and an upgrade to Windows XP-Home Edition offer, so I have an XP upgrade CD.
As for the System Restore, I've never done one and I don't know exactly how it works. Is it too difficult? What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing that?
Thanks,
Beto

System Restore takes your pc back to the prior date that you choose. You will lose any programs that you have installed in the meantime, but not any data. Access it at Start;Programs; Accessories; System Tools. Just choose a restore date and follow the instructions.
An XP repair is done from the XP CD by choosing "repair" after you boot from the CD. You should not lose any installed programs using this.

If you are using the basic version of Limewire, you might like to look at this: at least the free version downloads adware and spyware.

and this:

If you still want to use it, maybe Limewire FAQ at
http://www.limewire.com/english/content/faq.shtml
would help.
Maybe it is not working if you are blocking or have uninstalled some of its spyware (as for Kazaa)
This is Limewire site privacy statement:

I think I solved the problem,
I just went to Network Connections, set up a new connection, cleared the ICF, and restarted my PC.
I don't know what was wrong with the previous connection, but with this new connection I've been able to connect to the gnutella network using LimeWire and WinMX. Thanks anyway and hope this works for anyone having a similar problem.
Beto,
