Problem reinstalling Windows XP Operating System
Can anybody give me a hand here? I've been having problems with an incredibly slow computer, failure to respond to mouse commands, etc. Finally I decided to reinstall the operating system, figuring spyware was probably the source of my problem.
I followed the directions as well as I could in the owner's manual that came with my computer. It appeared to work...my desktop was wiped clean and it appeared the computer was back to where it started.
If I go to my control panel and bring up the list for add or delete programs, it looks fine. Everything that is in there belongs. If I go to the Start button and select all programs, same thing. Everything looks to be in order. But if I go to My Computer, then select my C-drive, then open up the folder entitled Programs, I find all kinds of programs that should have been deleted.
There are also lots of other files, many of which I can't touch because I don't know what they are.
Shouldn't these have been wiped out in the reinstallation of Windows XP? Can anybody tell me what I did wrong?
Also now I get these constant pop-ups of Windows Messenger. Is there a way to disable this annoying program?
Thanks,
Ron Coleman

It appears you did not delete your C:\ partition when you reinstalled. If you do that it is subsequently formatted and all the prior information on it is removed. See the procedures here and in the included links.
It's not clear whether Messenger Service or Windows Messenger is bugging you but in either case the fix is here or here.
