Problem with win.ini file and HP printer

Hello to one and all; first post here. I am having a problem installing a HP printer onto my Dell Dimension tower and I'm afraid that HP has dumped it all back onto me. Quick version:
HP Photosmart 3210 printer, installs to halfway point and then  gives an "Error 1913. Could not update the ini file WIN.INI. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it." message. HP offered umpteen solutions including Safe mode restarts, changing read only attributes, changing the Microsoft Management Console, none of which worked. Bottom line: the win.ini file is on my computer; it opens with Notepad (I don't have the contents in front of me at the moment), it's smaller than 64K in size. For some reason or another, it can't be found/read/edited by the HP program. Is there a direction that I can go with this? I'm starting here and working my way through tech support and/or beyond, my Dell disk that came with the tower has been of no use to me and I'm not sure it has the info I need anyway.
AAR, is this a Windows problem, an HP problem or a personal problem? Be honest, I can take it. Thanks, David Walters

What OS are your using?  It depends on the OS you are using. You will need to download the appropiate drivers for the OS from HP website. HP is pretty good about drivers. I have never had a problem loading HP printers with the correct drivers.

That would be Windows XP Home with Service Pack 2. I'll pay a visit to the HP website and see what I can find. I may have to think that if HP tech service couldn't figure out the problem over the course of 5 days, I am probably going to have to go to Microsoft to seek an answer. Thanks for the help, I'll se what happens.
