Problems re-installing Windows XP on Inspiron 1200

I have an Inspiron 1200 with 512 MB of RAM, and Windows XP Home Edition.  I've been trying to re-install Windows using the Upgrade feature.

During installation, I continually get error messages telling me that a certain file can't be found on the CD, i.e migregdb.ex_ at location D:\I386, plus others.

When I see this, I click on the Browse button and can see the file at the location where it's supposed to be, but it won't install.  In other words, when I click on it I get the same error message that it can't be found.

I used the option to continue reinstalling without this file, with the disclaimer that Windows may not perform correctly.  Sure enough, this happened with 29 ex_, dl_ and other files, and Windows doesn't perform correctly.

I'm reinstalling from an original Dell CD that came with the computer, Windows XP Home Edition plus Service Pack 2.  In fact, I have 2 copies of this CD and have tried installing with both.  The same problems occur with either CD.  I also have a purchased version of Windows XP Professional that was for my desktop before I upgraded to Vista, but I wanted to stay with the OEM version for my laptop, so I haven't tried using it.

Is there something that I'm overlooking?  Or something that I haven't found while browsing this forum?

Help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Denaldenson,

I assume you have backed up your data.  Therefore, I suggest you do a clean install of XP.  Instructions are here:  http://www.djdenham.com/Install%20Procedures.htm

Hope this info helps.
