Problems with my new Dimension 2400 - Cannot boot up Windows XP - Screen Freezes on "Please Wait Windows is Starting up"

Can you help me! I have had my dimension 2400 a week now and my screen froze whilst in the middle of loading a game, it would not allow me to log out of the system, so I switched the PC off at the mains, when I booted it back up again it got as far as the blue screen "Please wait, Windows is starting up" and it just freezes won't go any further. I have contacted Dell Technical support and they asked me firstly to insert the Window XP operating disk and do a repair which I did, still froze at the same place, then they suggest I insert diagnostics disk and check the hard drive for any problems, this took several hours to complete of which Dell Technical support would call me back, (they didn't) by the time it had finished and I tried to call back Dell Technical was closed.

Whilst on the phone, the technical Advisor did suggest that if they hard drive is fine that I should try doing a reinstallation of Windows XP, however, I have inserting the CD to attempt a reinstallation of Windows XP and now when it has got as far as the set up and it asks you to select R for Repair or Enter for Installing Windows XP whatever I press on the keyboard nothing happens, just frozen again.

I have a Logitech cordless keyboard and mouse and I thought it could be this that was not allowing me to go any further, but I have tried switching off and using a normal corded keyboard and mouse, skill will not let me select R for Repair or Enter for installing Window XP. Please help???

ratchet_louie,

Have the corded (original) keyboard and mouse plugged in (and ofcourse monitor), all other periphials disconnected.  Remember you must boot as the CD drive being selected as first, and with the XP disk in the CD drive.  Follow the steps here for Repair/Reinstall.

Thanks for your help, I have successfully reinstalled Windows XP onto my Computer.

I am now confused about installing the rest of the software and in what order I should do this. I have various disks that came with my machine, should I install them in some kind of order or doesn't it really matter. I have drivers for Modem, dianostics and resource disk, Anti Virus software, CD-DVD Burner etc...

ratchet_louie,

Using your resource disk, install the chipset first, then install all the others, for example, video, sound, printer.  You will probably reboot each time a driver is installed.  The second to last thing to do is install your wireless keyboard and mouse.  The very last thing to do is install your anit-virus program.
