Question: All about Windows HOSTS file, 127.0.0.1 and utilization of Anonymizer

Hi everyone ...

From http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm, I read about prevention of parasites using HOSTS file, which the main idea is re-routing certain website to 127.0.0.1 (localhost - loopback host).

I am now using Mozilla with Ad-Block extension installed, which IMHO will do the same as above. So, basically I should not worry about parasite intrusion. But, I really want to know further.

Questions:
1. When we're using anonymizer software (JAP, Multiproxy or whatever), we should configure connection setting uses "manual proxy configuration" that is referencing to 127.0.0.1 and certain appointed port. IMHO, this means we are making the "local loopback" into an "open loopback", since the anonymizer software will re-route it like so. Then, does the protection using windows HOSTS file as above will still work?

2. Is it possible to change the loopback to other than 127.0.0.1? If possible, how to do that?

3. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Host_file#Ad_filtering, re-routing bad website is not achievable only from uses 127.0.0.1 (local host) but also to 0.0.0.0 (no IP). I wonder, why MVPS guys prefer to use local host? Is there any side effect if we use no IP?

Thank you so much.

If you use SpySweeper, it will prevent your host file from changing.  Obtain it at www.webroot.com.  Using a proxy such as 127.0.0.0 does not prevent malware.

Spybot S&D includes an option to add and protect (Lock) the Host File should you decide to use this layer of protection.
Advanced Mode>Tools>Hosts File. Click on Hosts File and you have the option of adding the Spybot S&D Host list to your Host file. Then in IE tweaks, you can have Sypbot lock the host file against hacker changes.
You can also find a very good explanation of how to set up (and maintain) a "Host File" program at "Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File"
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

This is freeware, and he keeps the Host file data updated. I personally do a composite of this file and the Spybot entries.
I also use this on my old Dimension 350 with w98 and it works well with no noticeable slowdown. Operational slowdowns have been noticed in some cases. This is explained in the Help section of Sypbot.
