Have you tried just running it in Windows?  It appears to be the same format as the other Windows-based update utilities, regardless of the instructions (which appear to simply be instructions for the wrong format).

Dear Flash:  Thanks for your post.  Have you run this in Windows yourself?  If yes, on what equipment and version of Windows?  Given that it's a BIOS, we should be careful.  If anyone has run this in Windows XP successfully, please advise.

I have ran this update on several OptiPlex 755 systems. I just ran it within Windows. The drivers and downloads installation instructions is totally wrong. This is something we have complained about recently.

Dear flash and natakuc:  Thanks for thie helpful info.  I have now run A21 in the Windows environment (Win XP Pro SP3) and all seems OK.  I also followed SpeedSteps' suggestion that my AV be uninstalled first so as not to interfere.  I did something similar.  See

en.community.dell.com/.../20221360.aspx

Please do push Dell not to be so flat-out wrong with its instructions.

No, but I can on Monday, and I will do so without the slightest hesitation:

1. The file (O755-A21.exe) has the same naming convention as the other versions: O755-A19.exe,  O755-A17.exe, etc.  Generally, the name format will be different for those that can and those that cannot run from Windows.

2. A21, like A19, runs the same installer, giving the same message in Windows on an unsupported machine:

3. The instructions for A19 include BOTH the instructions for running it in a DOS environment and for running the same file in a Windows environment.

4. Given the issues the Support Site has had the last several months, their descriptions (and accompanying linked instructions) cannot be trusted at the moment.  If you look at the A21 download page, there is not an Installation Instructions section and the Previous Versions section is incomplete.  The Support Site has been experiencing this exact problem with several groups of recently deployed updates.

Oh, believe me, we are pushing ... we use the Support Site every day, both in our real jobs and on these forums as volunteers, so you can imagine our frustration.  The instructions aren't so much incorrect as they are incomplete, but we still don't understand why it is so hard for them to get it right.
