RPC shutdown/MSBlaster virus

All, I've just contracted the MSBlaster virus on my Inspiron 1100, right after updating my anti-virus program! I've read the forums, but my problem is twofold: The shutdown happens right after login, so I don't get any time to change the RPC settings. Plus, I can't find the Recovery tab in Services.msc. Finally, my start menu and task bar disappeared, but I was able to create a new one. Do I need to reinstall XP? And, since I only have the provided Reinstall CD, does this mean all the data is lost? Finally, should I go buy a full copy of XP to try to do recovery? Thanks for the help! I thought I was being careful about protecting against viruses, but I guess it wasn't enough!

Can you get into safe mode?

Hello, Yes, I can get into safe mode. In fact, I can get into various modes from the F8 button. In all of them, the Blaster hits before I can take any corrective action. Just looking for any ideas that might save me from completely reloading my system. Thanks!

You will have to remove the drive from the PC, install it in another PC as a secondary drive and then scan the drive using the other PC to remove the virus, after that is done, put it back in the original PC and boot into windows, then run the blaster removal tool to get the rest of it out of the registry.

The infected drive can be installed in an external usb hard drive  enclosure to scan on another PC.

After you are done, and up and running, be sure to get all the Windows updates available.

You can stop the system shutting down this way

click START then RUN and type in
shutdown /a  (there is a space before / )
