Recording with XP

I know there's a program called Sound Recorder in the Programs > Entertainment > Accessories folder.  From some Internet searches, I've concluded that I can plug a microphone into my PC and record sounds into a .WAV(?) file using the Sound Recorder program. Can I then copy that file onto a CD-R and play it on my home CD player?  Or, do I need other programs/processes?  I have Windows XP Pro, on a Dell machine with sound card and Media Player 10.  Thanks.

You can use the Windows Recorder to record from the Microphone input, only (not the Line In).  It will record for 60 seconds.  You can save the file as a wav file and then use the saved wav file(s) to make an audio CD.

You should use software that came with your sound card for a better way to record. Creative has a decent recording program, for instance.

Hmmm, I was hoping to record a full CD, 60 seconds isn't going to cut it.  I don't see anything else that looks like recording software, except something called Sonic RecordNow, and I think that's just for making CDs.

Any other recommendations?

Thanks.

You will have to buy a recording program if there is nothing else on your PC for recording.

Polderbits, a shareware program for recording is popular.  But I don't know if it will record from the mic input.    Scan through the downloads section at www.zdnet.com  and see what you can find.  Otherwise commercial software suites such as Roxio Easy Media Creator V7.5 or Nero V6 have programs for recording.
