Recovery CD doesn't re-format hard-drive
I am trying to use the Dell Decovery CD to Reformat my hard-drive and re-install Win98 (currently have WinME on my Dell 4100). I select the option to reformat/Reinstall, and it says it will be re-formating my hard-drive, but this doesn't occur. It did re-install Win98, but skipped over the re-format. Any ideas why this might occur.....a virus perhaps?

I'd be more inclined to bet on an improperly configured/labeled Recovery CD. In most instances, you're better off formatting the drive first, using a Win98SE (or WinME) boot disk, then reinstall the operating system from the CD. Windows XP is the first OS I've seen that lets OEM versions properly format the drive prior to reinstalling the OS.

You cannot do it in command mode. Windows will not format the partition it is installed on. You need to boot to true DOS using a boot diskette which you can make at Start|Settings|Control Panel|Startup Disk tab or download from here. At the DOS prompt enter format c: /s and click . When formatting is complete use the Recovery CD to reinstall Windows.
