Recovery CD msg re invalid line in txtsetup.sif

Question

I was in the process of creating a recovery CD using Dell's utility (it was 30% completed writing the files to the CD) when my Inspiron 6000 crashed.  When it restarted, the partially created CD was still in the drive and it seems to have wiped out all the boot info as now I get nothing when I power it on except a lighted screen, indicating the power is on; no messages, nada.  I received a recovery CD from Dell today, but when I boot to it, I get the message: line 4259 of the INF file \i386	xtsetup.sif is invalid....  setup cannot continue.   I need a resolution that doesn't involve formatting the drive, as I have lots of data that is not backed up (my bad!).   The system had been locking up and/or crashing off and on for about 24 hours prior to this catastrophic event, which was why I was trying to get a recovery CD made.  The last error message I had when it was still partially functioning was that the ntoskrnl.exe was corrupt or missing.  That may or may not have a bearing on the current problem. After several attempts to reboot, it would finally 'catch' and launch WinXP, and that was when I tried to create the recovery CD..   BTW, I am using XP Home, SP2   Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions!

The first thing you should is e-mail Dell tech support and get things rolling in case your system requires repair.

Secondly, I suggest you look at THIS. They instruct you to try "last known good configuration" from the F8 boot screen.
