Recovery CD vs Reinstallation CD

I have a Dimension 2400 desktop.  It has been overcome with viruses and trojans and who knows what else.......... So I plan on reloading / restoring to original configuration.

Is there a difference between Recovery CD and Reinstallation CD?  Instructions keep mentioning Recovery CD.  All I have is Reinstallation CD for operating system and several other CDs for drivers, etc.

I just want to be sure that I have all the required CDs before starting this.

Thanks.

The reinstallation CD is the one you need, as well as the one with the  drivers. But here's a thought, do you have a CD-RW? If you do, I would download the drivers from Dell, it would be the most up-to-date. And download Sp2 from MS. Update Bios before starting, and reinstall Windows, then the drivers then Sp2. Make sure you have the Bios set to boot from the CD-Rom.

Thanks for that information, Odius.  I'll be off to download drivers now.  As for SP2, well, I am on dial-up and that may take a while, yes?  hahaha

Most definitely in a position to learn a lot.  Will try to post back with results.

Frog_g,

You can order SP2 from here:

 http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

Also, recall a post that Best Buy (if available to you) has them...maybe CompUSA...give'm a call...

Order the cd then, most of the problems you might hear about Sp2, generally come from people who upgraded instead of doing a clean install. The order form says it might take 4 to 6 weeks, but most here got theirs in one week. Good luck.

Thanks Odius and Wild One, for the information about SP2 order and the suggestion of Best Buy / CompUSA.  Both of those places are reasonably close.

BEFORE that tho, I have run into a problem.  The restore is crashing with BSOD - re: Bad_Pool_Caller....... It performs a dump and reboots.  Then tries to continue on with Setup.   How do I stop it from trying to continue with Setup.  ????  Told you this would be a learning experience.  hahahaha

While waiting for an answer, I'll continue downloading latest drivers.

Thanks again.

Again, I offer thanks for your response.  I couldn't quite find anything that helped, but I did see somewhere about booting from floppies.  Have downloaded floppy program and created disks.

Fingers crossed at the moment that I will be successful.  The initial load said it was missing several files, but I am hoping to be able to resolve that as I go.  I am MUCH further ahead than before.  In fact, I have just gone further than before.  It is looking good.

Will report back later.
