First question do you have A Dell Windows XP Reinstallation CD?

If you don't purchase one on eBay e.g. here.

Once you have this follow my wiki A Clean Install of XP for best results. Skip step 1 and 2 naturally. Carry out the additional part which mentions DBAN to fully wipe the drives before beginning just in case.

Please follow the below steps to perform Windows XP installation on the system.

Check to ensure that all your installation media is available. You will need the following:

• The Dell Operating System Reinstallation CD/DVD,

• The Dell Resource CD/DVD,

Reinstall the operating system from the OS Setup Disk.

1      Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD drive, and then restart your computer. If the message Press any key to boot from the CD... appears, press a key to continue booting to the CD.

Note:

If the computer does not boot to CD, follow these instructions. If it does boot to CD ignore this note.

Configuring Your Computer To Boot To The CD Drive

1    Power on the system and watch for the Dell logo to appear.

2    When the Dell logo appears, press the key to load the Boot Menu. If the menu does not appear, restart the system and tap several times at the Dell logo screen.

3    When the Boot Menu appears, highlight the CD/DVD drive (listed as "CDROM", "CD/DVD" or "CD/DVD/CD-RW") entry from the list and press .

2      In the Windows XP Setup screen (Figure 1), press to set up Windows XP.

3      In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, read the license agreement, and then press to scroll through the agreement.

4      Press to accept the terms and conditions specified in the license agreement. The partition screen is displayed. depending on your computer configuration, the partitions listed may include a PC Restore partition (2.7 to 4.75 GB) or a MediaDirect (1.2 GB) partition.

5      Highlight the largest partition and press .

If you are prompted to format the partition, use the up or down arrow keys to highlight Format the partition using the NTFS file system (Quick). Press or , if applicable, to format the partition. In cases where the drive must be checked for errors, select the Format the partition using the NTFS file system option.

Setup will format the drive, if necessary, then copy the files needed for installation. This process can take several minutes. Once done, Windows will restart the computer to continue Setup from the hard drive.

6      After the computer restarts, Setup continues with a graphical user interface (GUI) in the classic Windows theme. In this stage, you are asked to input information to personalize your installation. Your screen may blink several times during this process, which is normal. The information to input, and the order it is provided, is shown below:

Click Next on the Regional and Language Options window.

In the Personalize Your Software screen, type your name in the Name: field and your organization's name in the Organization: field, if applicable, and click Next.

3.

In the Computer Name screen, type the computer name in the Computer Name: field if you want to change it from the name provided. For Windows XP Professional Edition users, type a password in the Administrator Password: field and then type the same password in the Confirm Password: field.

Click Next.

 Note:

If the Modem Dialing Information screen appears follow the instructions below, otherwise continue on:

In the Modem Dialing Information screen, click to select the correct country/region for the What Country/Region are you in now? box.

2.

Type your area code in the What area code (or city code) are you in now? box and the number in the If you dial a number to reach an outside line, what is it? box, if applicable.

3.

Click to select one of the items below for The phone system at this location uses: box:

 Tone dialing if your phone service uses tone dialing.

 Pulse dialing if your phone service uses pulse dialing.

Click Next.

5.

In the Date and Time Settings screen, verify that the correct Date, Time, and Time Zone appear, and click Next.

6.

In the Networking Settings screen, click to select Typical, and click Next. If available, click Skip to skip the networking setup section. For Windows XP Professional users, click to select No, this computer is not on a network..., and click Next.

After this system will require driver’s installation on the system which you can easily perform from the resource CD of the same system model.
