Reinstalling OS and prrograms on new hard drive

Hi everyone - I plan to install a new hard drive on my Dell Inspiron 8600 Laptop Win XP Pro.  Do I simply run the CDs that came with computer when purchased?  Would I need to update from Dell as well as Windows?  I appreciate your help.

oceandreamer,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

You would just boot to the XP cd and create partitions if none exist. Then format and reinstall Windows. Once you have Windows installed you can then put in the Dell resource cd and install all the drivers begining with the Chipset Drivers. Once you have all the drivers loaded then you can go to the Microsoft website and download the latest service pack. After all that is loaded then go back to the Dell support site and download any new driver updates for your system.

Don't forget to install the Notebook System Software (NSS) before the Intel Chipset.  Without the NSS there is a chance that not all of the hardware in the computer will work correctly.  The latest drivers can be found here on the Dell Support website.

Thanks for the information, Larry.  I've added the site to my favorites.  This will be a learning experience for me since I've never done it before.  I'm not sure why the original Hard Drive died, but obviously, its time was up!

Like Jesse, I'm glad to help.

Since it sounds like doing a clean install of XP is (relatively) new to you, I thought I'd list the full list of drivers for your system, just to prevent any confusion for you.  The list below is in the recommended order, although once the Notebook System Software and Chipset are installed the order doesn't really matter.

  • Dell Notebook System Software
  • Intel Mobile Chipset driver
  • nVidia GeForce4 4200 video driver or ATI Mobile Radeon 9000 driver
  • SigmaTel STAC 9750 audio driver
  • Broadcom Integrated Network Controller driver
  • Modem Daughter Card (MDC) driver
  • Wireless MiniPCI driver (if customer has a device)
  • Wireless Bluetooth (if customer has a device)
  • Alps touchpad drivers

If you have added any hardware (USB or PCMCIA devices) you would also need to install software and/or drivers for them as well.

If you run into questions and need help right away, give Tech Support a call.  Otherwise feel free to post questions back here and the fine members of this forum will, I'm sure, be glad to offer their help. ;)

Hi,

I have a Dimension 4600 and I have replaced my HD and reinstalled XP-Pro.  However, I can't find the Resource Disk.  I went to the Downloads area nd downloaded the Network, Video and Audio Drivers.  I have all the standard components so is this all I need?  Is there a chipset driver I need to download too?

Thx,

-juan

The XP drivers for the 4600 are:

  • Intel 865GV chipset driver
  • AGP 4X Video Driver or Integrated video driver depending on configuration
  • ADI 1980 integrated audio driver
  • Intel 10/100 Integrated NIC driver
  • ProSet II NIC Diagnostic Utility
The Intel ProSet diagnostic utility is optional.

Yes, that is the recommended order.

From a practical standpoint, as long as the Dell Desktop (or Notebook) System software is first (if the system needs it) followed by the Chipset Software, the exact order for the rest of the drivers is entirely up to the person doing the install.

Thank you Larry!  Can I assume that the order you listed is the order I should install the drivers?
