Reinstalling Windows XP -- No Internet Connection

This morning I am installing Windows XP Professional Edition and trying to do a bare minimum install. Last week, I spent six or more hours working, often with the help of tech support chat, on erasing hard drive and reinstalling because my computer was constantly going to blue screen/device driver problems. Well, guess what? Within a day of the reinstall, I was once again getting blue screens. This time, I'm trying to do bare minimum reinstallation, wait a few days before installing any device drivers, etc. and then will do one at a time to see where the problem is. ... Anyway, I have high-speed DSL but the computer with newly installed XP is not recognizing that. How do I get the computer to recognize that it is connected to DSL? Thanks for all help.

Did you install the chipset driver and the network driver for your computer, so the ethernet port will work?  Or are you connecting through the USB port?

Driver installation:

The issue is not installing a modem driver, as another thread recommends. I'm not using a modem. The last time I reinstalled Windows XP (last week), it just automatically connected to Internet.

check to see if the ethernet port in back of your PC is blinking then check to see if the modem side port is blinking if its not then the connection to the PC is not there (then the above would pertain)
