Remote procedure call service in windows xp sp2

I accidently disabled the 'Remote procedure call' service in my dimension 8300 which is running windows xp sp2. Now when I log in lot of services do not start as they are dependent on 'Remote procedure call'. I am not able to enable this service as 'Remote procedure call' service window does not open.
Please help on how to enable this service again.

If that does not work

Click Start, Run, type regedit, click OK.
Use the +es in the tree in the left panel to navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/RpcSs
Click on that key to show its contents in the right hand panel
right click on thye value called Start, click modify and change the value to 2.
Close regedit, Restart the PC.

Note one post I found stated that despite the RPC now being startup type automatic (and should therefore have started on reboot), it had not and could not be started in services.msc.

If you find that also, try starting into safe mode. If that also does not work, post back. There may be some other things in the registry that can be corrected. Otherwise a repair reinstall might be necessary.

You could also try using system restore to restore to a time prior to when you disabled RPC, but that may not work either as the system restore service depens on RPC.

Right click on  "My Computer" click on "Manage" then expland "Services and Applications", double click on Service and find RPC and start the service.

Thanks for the advice guys. The registry setting for Start of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/RpcSs was already set to 2.
But I found some other posting on the microsofts support site that mentioned about deleting a registry subkey named Legacy_RPCSS under HKLM\System\CurrentSetControl\HardwareProfiles\Current\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root and that worked for me. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the very useful feedback. I've noted it for future reference.
