Remove BVRP/modem-on-hold, causing a Vista error

Upgraded to Vista, last remaining issue is related to the Dell BVRP modem-on-hold software.  An icon for it on on the control panel, but when clicked it produces an error.  The message header says HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\BVRP SOFTWARE, INC\Modem on Hold.  The message text = Key is missing!!!

It is not in the software list to uninstall, I can't locate the files on the machine anywhere, I tried to reinstall from the OEM discs however they say it is an unsupported operating system and will not load.  It is not listed on the Microsoft Install Clean Up utility, at least if it is there it isn't legible as such.  No issues with this were reported by the Dell or Microsoft Vista upgrade advisors.

This same error message appears in other situations, such as when I start typing in the word "modem" into the Vista search.  When I get to the letter d of "modem", it produces this same error message.  If I start in save mode and open the control panel, it produces this same error message.

Other than it came on the machine, I don't know what this software is and just want to remove it.  I don't use the modem, don't care about this utility.  There are no clues on the BVRP website, no updates available, HELP!!!

Please advise...Larry

"Key is missing" means Registry Key is missing. If all you get is an error when you use Control Panel, it's not a big deal. Just don't click on it. You can (if you are comfortable with this) use Regedit to go to the entry and remove it. Navigate to this key & delete it: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\BVRP SOFTWARE, INC\Modem on Hold.

Thank you Mary, I can avoid clicking it but it still causes problems.  This same error appears in other situations, such as when entering the word "modem" in the Vista search box, once you get to the letter "d" of the word it creates the error and the search dialog terminates abnormally, and then Explorer freezes, etc..  .  Also, there is no key in the registry to delete, nothing titled BVRP, nothing named "modem on hold".  In a search of the registry there is one entry for the text BVRP, under Current User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Mountpoints2\ \Autorun\DefaultIcon, and all it has is an entry for d:\bvrp.ico.  D:\ is the DVD drive.

Any ideas on how to find the program or service that is placing the icon on the control panel and/or eliminate whatever is looking for that key?

The program must be gone, but the Registry entry is still there. You'll need to edit the Registry. I would delete that entry for the bvrp icon. I would also do a Edit>Find for BVRP (in the Registry) and see what it comes up with. Keep pressing F3 after every find to search for more. Or wait a bit until someone comes up with a better solution. PS This is why I have waited until other users install Vista. Thanks to your problem, I made sure to uninstall Modem Helper, Modem on Hold, plus any other program I don't use.
