Remove Read Only

Question

I am using Windows XP.  I have wireless 'network' within my house and sometimes open files on my desktop PC from my laptop.  However when I go to save the files back to the destop, I get the message that the file is 'Read Only' and cannot be saved.   I have tried using Properties to remove Read Only from the folders involved on the desktop, but I can't remove it permanently.  As soon is I have unchecked Read Only for the folder and hit Apply, the file immediately reverts to Read Only.   How can I get rid of Read Only and make the file stay that way?
