Removing icon In Task Bar
Can you advise me how to dispose of an icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the
Task Bar? In an effort to do this, I removed the shortcut of the program from my screen, but an icon
still persists in appearing at start-up in the Task Bar.
I didn't want to eliminate the program to achieve the above.
I have a Dell 4100 Desktop computer with Windows XP - Home Edition operating system - Service Pack 2.
Many thanks for your co-operation and advice.

ok, limewire is a p2p and its set to start with your windows, removing the shortcut does nothing.
we have 2 options:
1. keep limewire but stop it from automatically loading with windows.
2. uninstall limewire completely off of your pc.
which would you like?

unlike with using Ccleaner, you can restart the program at windows startup at a future date by re-checking the check box in startup.

Actually setting your windows to not startup normal is not recommended by MS or me, yes its the easy way but no its not the proper way.
An OS needs to start normally, otherwise at some point down the road it will have a conflict with something.
msconfig is not there to change boot options permanently as far as I know.
I always go by how I wanted to be treated and if somebody advised me to change how windows boots just to stop an app from starting that would really tick me off.
but to each his own
also ccleaner is one time thing, you install it one time and after that adjusting startups is very easy and its a great tool for cleaning so its a good ammo to have in your arsenalOtiss

with all due respect you are wrong, msconfig is there for testing purposes not permanent, otherwise you would not get a prompt saying you have started windows abnormally and that if you have choose to ignore that message to not see it again.
if it was there for that reason then you would not get that message ;)
and I dont' appreciate your personal comment of saying I don't understand something, based on what fact did you think I'm the one missing the point? What facts did you use?
fact: ms will tell you themselves that msconfig is not for permanent use.
fact: you know its not meant for permanent use cause of the prompt you have to ignore
fact: you know its not meant for permanent use because aftar you change and reboot and go to msconfig you will see its not set to boot in normal mode.
those are the facts and not my opinion, now you tell me you facts, not what you or anybody else thinks, show me some facts.
you can start by telling us why setting windows to not boot in normal manner is a good idea when it can be easily avoided.
now you got personal by trying to say I don't understand something, I'm not gonna go to that level, you wanna discuss then lets discuss but keep your personal comments to yourself or you can pm me with them.
you are right bad advise is horrable, for example advising people not to start windows in a normal fashion.
MSConfig, or Microsoft System Configuration Utility, (or simply System Configuration in Windows Vista) is a utility to troubleshoot the Windows startup process

All:
This is the third time this week I have had to come in remind people that we are all on the same side here.
I, as would others, would be more than interested in a healthy and constructive debate as to which is the proper way to disable an program from startup, but this does need to be done without insults to one another.
So keep it nice and state your case. If that's not possible, than there is certainly no need to respond.
Oh yeah!! Everyone do the "Happy Friday Dance" :smileyvery-happy:

Otiss,
Your comments about msconfig are absurd. As bacillus already indicated, msconfig is there exactly for the purpose of disabling items that you don't want to start automatically every time you boot the PC. But, you can always go back into msconfig and re-check the box if you change your mind and want something to start automatically at boot up again.
As for not being a "normal" startup, I don't know where you got that notion either. After you make a change on Startup tab in msconfig and reboot, Windows gives you a notice about "selective startup". All that means is some items listed on the Startup tab haven't started. Put a check in the "Don't show this again" box and Windows will understand that you have purposely changed the settings in msconfig. You won't see that message again, unless/until you make more changes in msconfig.
Please, if you don't understand things, don't give advice. Bad advice is worse than no advice, especially when it comes to PCs and Microsoft products.

The matter of eliminating the LimeWire icon in the System Tray has now been resolved.
Through an oversight, I didn't notice this option was available through the Tools, Options, System Tray of the LimeWire program. I have used that option in this case.
Many thanks for your response and advice in this respect.
