Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.1 Basic

HELP!! We rec'd a CD for this when we got the upgrade from Dell with our new computer awhile back. We're trying to get it loaded on the PC - put the CD in and it gets hung after it reboots & the install never finishes. Now, we can't even get into our Outlook Express to get mail because of it. I've tried to uninstall Easy CD Creator but when it tries to execute that it says another install is currently in progress so it won't even let it uninstall. PLEASE ADVISE!! Thank you!!

Try a system restore to lets say yesterday if you just did this today.  I would suggest you go to Roxio's website to see if that version is compatible with XP.  There are issues with some versions.  Kip

I hesitate to help here cause I don't quite understand but I would try System Restore first off. If you could locate the temporary folder where EZCD was using for the install process. Work your way to the C:\Windows\Temp folder and delete any and all files found in there.

Did this software come with your current CDRW ?; are you sure it wasn't already installed ? Please clarify the purchase history of computer and Roxio.

If you upgraded from Win98/Me to Windows XP and didn't uninstall any older incompatible software such as the older Adaptec Easy CD Creator (any Adaptec version) that could be your problem.

Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 or 6 is Windows XP compatible.

There is a manual procedure to remove any Roxio/Adaptec from the PC (clean it out) so you can install the Windows XP compatible version.  However, once you do get it installed you will need to download and install the latest Roxio updates before you use it.

ADDED: Refer to my uninstall instructions in this other forum thread.  http://delltalk.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=sw_winxp&message.id=99174

Atl.dll is system file. To put a good copy back go to Start/Run and Enter this command:

sfc /scannow(note space); put in Xp cd if promted

That should fix that and you may be able to run System Restore now. If you haven't done so already, go to Start/Programs and if you see the Roxio software uninstall it. (If it's not there it may show upp in Control Panel/Add\Remove). Reboot. Do this before you run the sfc command or SR.

PC was purchased from Dell originally with ME as the OS. We rec'd the XP upgrade directly from Dell & the Roxio CD came with that.  I just spent over an hour on the phone with someone from Dell. He's suppose to be calling me back. He kept trying to get it to start up with F8 so he could do a restore PC didn't want to do it. Anyway, since that time I found a way to do a System Restore through the Help screens. Every time I try to do it it says it can't because it's missing ATL.DLL. After I hit ok about 50 times it attempts to go through anyway & let me pick a previous date to restore to. However, the restore has been unsuccessful for the last 3 dates I've picked & I keep getting the ATL.DLL error message. We've completely unplugged the PC & done a cold boot ~ it still recognizes somehow that it's in the middle of an install & won't let me uninstall through Start/ControlPanel/AddRemovePrograms as it says an install is still in progress. Other ideas? I would sure appreciate them at this point. Can't get into Outlook Express, can't print, nothing now....Please advise!

maxd - we were prompted & put in the XP cd. Now, what do we select on the "what do you want to do?"The options are "Install XP", "Install optional windows components", "Perform additonal tasks", or "Check system compatibility"? Thanks so much for your help!!

I don't see Roxio or Easy CD Creator on Start Programs. The strange thing is that I don't see it on Add Remove Programs either though - I wonder if the system restores I did do were partially successful (if that's even possible). I'm doing the sfc /scannow on Start/Run. I get the window saying "Please wait while Windows verifies that all protected Windows files are intact and in their original version" I don't have a status bar or anything & it's been up for a few minutes...should I expect this one to run for quite a long time?

Try this. Put the XP cd in and then run the sfc /scannow command again. It'll take 25-40 minutes on your system so you might have aborted it early. (There is a registry edit-I don't have it handy-that will show you the progress bar.)

PS This is the Registry edit. Backup (Expot) your whole registry to C:\ before you attempt any editing on your registry.)

System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

Value Name: SFCShowProgress

Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)

Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)

If Outlook had no problems before I believe it will work once we've made the corrections to System files and got that uninstall done. That may be tricky, ie over my head. I was hoping someone more knowlegable would jump in with a quick definitive fix. Here's hopin'.

Awesome ~ we're in the process of doing just that right now! I will send another message later tonight or tomorrow morning once this is finished.

Once that's complete do you think we'll need to reinstall anything to get Outlook going again? Also, then once we get everything back to how it was before we started ~ how do you suggest we approach the Roxio install this time?

Thanks again for your help & have a GREAT night! :)

maxd ~ Well, we didn't see your last post until just now. We had went to bed letting the sf...command run with the xp cd in. Woke up this morning to it being finished & nothing still working. Truely appreciate your attempts though! We ended up trying to restore again - still rec'd the ATL.dll error. Then, we decided to do the xp upgrade to the os again. ALAS, we can get into Outlook & Print again. Don't even want to think about trying the Roxio CD again...We may look at purchasing something - have to see. Just happy to be functional again. Very disappointed at all of the problems we had with the Roxio CD that came with the upgrade from Dell though. Again, thank you for your help & patience! Have a GREAT Christmas!! :)

I believe most of your problems are happening as a result of the fact that you used the XP (upgrade) CD 'incorrectly' in that it appears that you did what is called an upgrade install of XP over Windows Me. The (Upgrade) XP CD you received can actually do a clean install of the XP OS leaving no fragments of the Millenium OS to cause you grief. I suggest that that type of install, ie clean, is in your near future so you might want to start backing up stuff you consider important, eg email addresses, documents, etc. Even though your EZCD may not work properly your built-in XP 'burning' SW may be sufficient. Your Help and Support should be able to help you with the use of this XP feature. As for as your System Restore the most common fix is to disable SR, reboot, and then enable it (again). This may not work because of the atl.dll file probably needs to be re-registered. I'm not comfortable enough that that would solve it and I've never had to do it myself. If you can't use SR at all-try to Create a Restore Point to find out if it's useful at all- it won't hurt you to try to fix it. Use this link for that simple function.

The EZCD Basic 5.x version you got can be upgraded for XP use. After you get it properly installed you install this XP patch to it. You may want to attempt this after your clean install. Here's the XP patch link. Overnight ? (You may also want to get a backup browser such as NetScape 7.2 for times when IE or Outlook take a dive.)

PS You guys have a peaceful Christmas too; turn the computer off.

So, if we do the "Clean Install of XP" & not the "Upgrade" will that still give us Outlook? The reason I ask is because when we were speaking to the guy from Dell he kept asking us to put in our Office CD & we never rec'd one with the PC. I'm also guessing that when we did the "Upgrade" that it registered the ATL.DLL file or we wouldn't be working properly now?! Just a thought anyway...We may or may not attempt the Roxio CD upgrade again after the clean install....we're a little hesitant at this point...

Outlook is part of the MS Office suite, Outlook Express is part of Windows. Maybe the Dell Tech got confused (as so many people on this forum do) when people refer to Outlook Express as plain Outlook. I think you mean Outlook Express and that will be installed when you do a clean install of Windows XP.
