SATA is an alternative to SCSI and IDE. Its a method of connecting storage devices to your system. SATA is faster than IDE. SCSI is rarely found in desktops.
RAID is a way of combining multiple disks into one for performance or reliabuility reasons. If all you want to do is add a second hard drive to your system, you do NOT need RAID. Your exisiting SATA card is fine.
I could be wrong, but SATA is just another way for hard drives to transfer data while RAID is a system by which you can mirror hard drives or treat multiple hard drives as one.
