First run the diagnostics via the Dell BIOS and any extended tests. See the instructions on page 410 of my Windows Reinstallation Guide:

http://philipyip.wordpress.com/dell-community-forums/

Also since the system is used and seems to have software problems I recommend performing a clean install. See A Clean Install of Windows 7 also in the Windows Reinstallation Guide.

Hi Wordfiend,

It can be annoying when you experience various issues while using the computer. The easy way to fix the devices is to install all the drivers in the correct order. The following link has the steps on how to install the drivers for the hardware components in the correct order:
http://dell.to/X1IKGu

You can also download the latest drivers for your laptop from the following link by punching in the Service Tag:

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Still having trouble, though a number of the problems have been fixed. I now only have one unknown device left in my list. But when I tried to download and run Micron C400 7MM 040H the DVD drive thrashes and freezes. The only way to stop the thrashing and eject the DVD was to reboot in safe mode

(Keyboart shortcut did not work, nor did right-clicking the drive in Windows Explorer.)

Device manager says the DVD drive has up-to-date drivers.

I will likely have to run a clean install. Most of the bugs have been worked out, but the DVD drive is not responding. Won't read or format a disk, will only eject if I hit the eject button during startup.

Hi Wordfiend,

Thank you for your reply and for providing an update on the status. I suggest you to run the Microsoft Fixit from the following link that may fix this issue:
http://bit.ly/32ERX

To perform a clean install, you will need to boot from the Windows installation disk.

Please let me know about your findings.

I ran Fixit. It could not find the CD/DVD drive and was unable to fix the problem.

I also just ran the manual repair steps: support.microsoft.com/.../982116 and reinstalled the CD/DVD drivers. Failed to fix the problem. Only way to eject a DVD is to reboot the computer and hit the eject button before the Windows screen loads.

Can it read a Windows Reinstallation or Linux Live disc in the system BIOS?
