I was chatting with a Microsoft tech to see what is causing this. I give up. LOL The person did not know that XP has an event viewer.

delta7000, I have the same problem. You might want to read this thread. Note something called UPH Clean-hive cleanup. I haven.t figured out how to use UPHClean. There is quite a long readme.txt. Maybe this thread will help. Post back if you figure this out.

Thanks aps@sun for the info. I also found a ton of info after a Google search. Let me read through and sort this out. Hopefully I can figure this out.

Delta7000, I will be waiting to hear from you. I did install UPHClean, however I just could not figure out how it worked or even if I installed it correctly so I uninstalled. Best Wishes. Hope you find a simple easy answer.

Hi again aps@sun. I haven't checked out that download yet but will probably tomorrow. I have checked out a lot of sites, including your links, and this seems to happen a lot. I ran "services.msc" and all my service are run in either LocalServices or NetworkServices. I also read that Norton might be the cause which I use. Most replys to this problem on other boards say don't worry about it. I just like to know why after installing SP2 is it happening all the time. I'll post after I check out that download or if I find out anymore info.

I am also running Norton Antivirus 2004 if that helps. I too have read a few articles/replies that say not to worry about it. It seems to occur when I shut down the computer.

I posted on another forum and these are the replies. The second post is correct. It did happen before but rarely. Now I check it each time I log on and it occurs about 75% of the time.

UPHClean is an additional service. After install and restart, you don't have to do anything, it runs in the background when needed, like any other service. You can see it in services (called User Profile Hive Cleanup) It should be set to automatic. Then in Event viewer, you'll see information event logs in Applications, on startup, telling you that it's started and also on shutdown, if it is invoked to close the handl on user profile.

Unless you have arthritis in your index finger, it is not difficult :-)

As given previously, go to

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1b286e6d-8912-4e18-b570-42470e2f3582&displaylang=en

scroll to the bottom for the download file: Download UPHClean-Setup.msi and save to some convenient place on your hard drive (If you have a folder called C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations, that's where .msi files can conveniently be stored, but any non system folder is just as good).

Right click on UPHClean-Setup.msi, click install.

Alternatively, download and save uphclean.exe, double click on it to install. You don't need both, they're just two ways in which the files are packaged.

You can also download and read the readme.txt file to learn more about UPHClean. (it will also be installed in C:\Program Files\uphclean, so you don't need to dowenload it separately if you don't want to).

You may need to restart for it to take effect, can't remember, but it will tell you if it is necessary. UPHClean will also appear in add/remove as 'User profile hive cleanup srrvice', should you want to uninstall it at any time.

There is nothing to set up, as by default it installs to start automatically.

However, you can always check the setting by looking in sevices (click start, run, type services.msc, click OK; In the window that opens, in the right pane scroll down to User Profile Hive cleanup, check that it is started and set to automatic startup type (expand the window to the right if you can't see all the columns). To change the settings of a service, double click on it, in the properties window that pops up, you'll see the settings you can change; but as I say, you don't normally need to do this .

JRosenfeld-Some arthritis in all fingers-however your instructions were excellent and detailed and I now have UPHClean installed as per your instructions. There was no message to reboot. I did anyhow and checked the Event Viewer and I am no longer received those Userenv/1517 messages in Event Viewer. Thank you for your time, details, and help.

Go for it delta 7000!
