Selected boot device not available after trying to re-install OS.
I'm trying to re-install Vista Home Premium 32BIT SP1 operating system for a Dell Dimension 4700 with an OS re-installation disc from Dell I bought recently. When I put the disc in the computer and restart, I press F12 to enter the boot setup. Once there, I click 'On-board or USB CD-ROM Drive' and fifteen seconds later I get a message, "Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility." When I press F1, I get "Selected boot device not available- Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility." This computer originally had Windows XP installed as a factory default. My current Operating system is Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP2. Any help would be appreciated.

I've even tried Dan Goodell's well-known website. I've dumped files to posts here on the forum including the results from a DSRFIX program downloaded to a bootable USB flash drive.

The fact PC Restore by Symantec didn't start suggests it was accidentally deleted. Is that partly right? I do have a Symantec folder under Program Files in My Computer. The sub-folder is titled LiveUpdate. Within that sub-folder are many files. The Symantec icon doesn't appear in the programs and features (installed programs) list in the Control Panel. So my question is, how do I confirm if I still have the PC Restore capability?

I tried your solution and it didn't work. After I press and hold and then press before the splash screen disappears, the only thing to appear was a Floppy diskette seek failure and keyboard failure error page. I suspect previously the BIOS setup was reset to factory default preferences resulting in the internal option being selected. As I don't have a floppy drive installed I selected off instead of USB to avoid the 'Floppy diskette seek failure'. Anyhow, the most irritating part was the keyboard error which paralyzed my keyboard. The PC Restore did not auto-start.

Hi Michael Mauldin,
The reason why PC restore is not happening is might be because the Hard drive wouldve been replaced or the Operating system would be reinstalled before. Since the PC restore is not happening the only other option is to reinstall the Operating software.
Now we have tried that also which is not working. Unable to reinstall OS using a disk might be because of two reasons 1. The CD might be bad 2. The CD drive might be bad which is not detecting the disk
Request you to checked the OS disk on any other system and check if it is booting to make sure that the CD is fine. Also
please try to arrange any bootable disk which can be used on this system and try booting from it to make sure the CD drive is working fine.
Let us know progress
Thanks & Regards

One thing to consider-- if your computer has 2 cd/dvd drives, you must use the upper (top) drive since it is the master drive.

Hi Michael Mauldin,
You can try changing the boot priority to harddrive in the BIOS and then try to start the system normally with the OS disk inserted in the CD drive
Let us know if this works
Thanks & Regards

I've tried setting the hard drive and the CD-ROM as a priority in the boot sequence. Each attempt was unsuccessful.
